PETŘINY MULTIPLEXSS 2023/2024
Multiplexes and their construction in the present is controversial due to a long-term decline in visitors. My concept of a multiplex on Petřiny is based on the topic of Faraday Cages which have the goal to deal with the issue of shortening attention-span in the society. This phenomenon of short attention-span is tied up with low visists of multiplexes and similar institutions. My intention is to create spaces isolated from the outside. The cinema halls, functioning as Faraday Cages, aim to support concentration of the audience. Visitors of the cinema are supposed to be conscious of the ongoing process and the Faraday Cages eliminate the subconscious perception of visitors‘s devices. The multiplex on Petřiny is a space with the goal to create a ritual, which provides the possibility to work with one‘s own attention-span.
Mass of the multiplex is adjusted to Petřiny. The building follows the street line, the beginning corresponds with the Petřiny high-rise dominant’s edge, the end of the multiplex ends at the imaginary line of Milunič’s residential building. Height of the multiplex corresponds with the common housing blocks of Petřiny. On the other hand, the multiplex differentiates itself thanks to the free ground floor, accommodating only a small café and a gallery space. Aim of the free ground floor is to make the public space passable. Inner function of the building is obvious thanks to the distinctive shape of the cinema halls. They are furthermore accentuated by metal coating, which signals tresspasers the added value of the cinema - Faraday Cages, which are omnipresent also in the interior thanks to its material difference.
Following the ground-floor café and gallery space, there is a square containing a community garden. Contrary to the strict inner system, the square is meant to be abstract and unsystematic. It supports the ritual atmosphere of the cinema, just like the carpets and tapestries inside.
